The Merchant of Venice-Act 3 Scene 5

Another short scene, with very little impact on the action of the play. This is a scene that lowers the tension of the play and gives the audience some respite before the action of the trial scene commences.

Launcelot, who left Shylock’s service in order to serve Bassanio is now, ironically, serving his daughter Jessica and her husband Lorenzo. Launcelot’s play on words and foolish banter frustrates Lorenzo, as he attempts to arrange dinner for that evening.

When Launcelot leaves, Lorenzo and Jessica discuss Portia and make it clear to the audience that she is a brilliant person and that no one can match her.
