The Merchant of Venice-Act 3 Scenes 3

This short scene takes us back to Venice, where Shylock is demanding his pound of flesh. He calls Antonio a fool that gave out interest free loans and it is clear that Shylock will take nothing but his bond. “I’ll have my bond. Speak not against my bond.

Antonio asks Shylock to hear what he has to say, but he simply responds, “I will not hear thee speak. I’ll have my bond, and therefore speak no more.”

Solanio tells Antonio that there is no way that the duke will allow Shylock to have his way but Antonio is aware that the duke cannot deny Shylock his bond, as this will have repercussions for the city of Venice. “The duke cannot deny the course of law.”

Antonio seems resigned to his fate but hopes that Bassanio will be there to see him pay the debt.
