Trash Key Moment: Raphael’s Interrogation

Posted onCategoriesBlog

The police came in the middle of the night and arrested Raphael. He felt sick and was crying uncontrollably. Despite being so scared in the back of the police car, he makes a vow that he wouldn’t tell the police anything because they know that there is a fight beginning and he must stay loyal to his friends.

He is embarrassed because he wets himself because he was so scared and this shows how nervous and scared he really was. When he is taken into the police station he gets sick, again showing how scared he is and how his body is reacting to the fear.  He is then taken from his cell to an interrogation room where he is asked questions about the bag that is missing.

When Raphael tells the police that he did find 1100 Pesos, they realise that he lied at the beginning. When they ask him who he was with, he says that he is alone and at that moment a policeman came from the side and hits Raphael knocking him to the ground.

The policeman lifted him up by the hair asking about the shoe he found but he tells them that he didn’t find a shoe. He tells them that the money was wrapped in an electricity bill and the policeman says, ‘this piece of shit can read?’ The policeman and the man in the suit then grab Raphael and pin him to the wall and he loses control and he soils himself. At this point, he is lifted up and taken to the window and he is held out the window by his ankles by the two policemen as they roar questions at him. He refuses to give in and despite the fact that he could have died, he remains loyal to Gardo and Jun-Jun.

They drag him back in and the man tells him that he will, ‘break every bone,’ in his body and that no one would care. He also says, ‘ we could put you in the trash and nobody would care.’ When they realise that he has soiled himself and is not going to give them any information, the man looks at him and says, ‘why do these people keep breeding?’ highlighting the attitude of the police towards the poor of Behala. When they let him go, he runs back to Behala and he ends the chapter by saying, ‘I knew then that I could run forever.’ This shows that he has seen how strong he is and has a newfound confidence as he runs home to Behala.
